Are you an experienced Environmental and Regulatory professional with a focus on managing hazardous waste? In this fast-paced role, you will be an integral member of our Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS or EH&S) team at our Commerce City refinery, which is the largest refinery in the Rocky Mountain region and the only petroleum refinery in Colorado.
As the Environmental & Regulatory Advisor (Waste Advisor) you will support environmental and regulatory compliance activities associated with the Commerce City Refinery as well as oversee the refinery waste compliance program. The Waste Advisor will collaborate with across teams to ensure that wastes generated at the refinery are properly managed and disposed of in accordance with all Federal and State regulatory requirements.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a similar field
4-10 years experience in hazardous waste management, remediation, and/or overall environmental regulatory compliance
Experience in an environmental program area that involves operations and experience providing guidance on a day-to-day basis to management and/or operations personnel
Technical knowledge of waste management regulations (e.g. RCRA, TENORM)
Ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements (e.g. RCRA, DOT, CWA, CAA, SPCC, environmental permits)
Experience assisting or conducting incident investigations, audits, and self-assessments
Ability to manage contractor services and budgets
Experienced in interpretation of laboratory results and other environmental data
Knowledge and understanding of refinery operations, and experience in the petroleum refining industry would be considered an asset
Responsibilities:
Advise Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, and Turnaround groups on waste compliance and other environmental regulatory compliance requirements
Advise on Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) compliance concerns
Act as the Suncor sponsor for the primary onsite waste contractor and manage contractors supporting the waste compliance program
Review and approve hazardous and non-hazardous waste profiles
Interact with regulators
Maintain facility Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan
Support emergency management and business continuity
Provide backup support for water compliance and remediation programs
Provide 24-7 on-call support to the refinery as a representative of the environmental group (approximately 8 weeks per year)
Prepare and submit reports and registrations including spill and release reporting, exception reports, and sustainability reports
Track compliance with 90-day accumulation and hazardous waste manifest return copy requirements
Location and other Key Details:
You will work out of our Commerce City refinery, located at 5801 Brighton Blvd.
Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs, including being on-call as appropriate and potentially working night shifts as necessary during large scale outages, turnarounds, and/or emergencies
You will be required to use ladders and work on elevated work sites such as scaffolds and towers with the ability to perform in a variety of different environments both indoor and outdoor as well as within confined spaces

Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
$90,000 - $115,000 annual salary and an annual incentive program
